My friend Embly introduced me to this great zine, Doris, some years ago. I love how both Embly and the creator of Doris can write about complex topics, yet present them in simple terms that everyone can understand in a concise, simple manner. I'm pretty sure I've seen them both use the title "Start." to begin a new project. It seems really obvious, but I think it can take a lot of guts to do just that - starting. Whether it's a big project (ehem, like starting a business), or small like making a photo album online, it can take someone diving in head first disregarding consequences, or someone weighing pros and cons to make an initial decision, or wondering if they have what it takes to make something happen - in any case it can take a lot to just start. As you may have gathered, Just Herbals is my brand spankin' new project, along with this website, and this blog. Basically there are a lot of starting points lately, and this is sort of my pep talk to myself.
I don't really consider myself a writer. I sometimes use more words than necessary to describe something. It takes me a very long time to write anything. I don't have a huge range of vocabulary and am not totally aware of proper grammar techniques like run-ons, so if you're a stickler for things of that nature, you've been forewarned. But starting this herbal venture pretty much requires me to do writing of some sort - product descriptions, class handouts, marketing etc. Even though it's a challenge, it's worth it. I'm realizing starting a business means doing things you wouldn't usually want to do, but believing in something so much pushes you to meet the challenge joyfully. So this blog is about me challenging myself to get comfortable and embrace the fact that I'll be writing a lot for this business. Here I want to practice the art of writing, talk about plants and things non-naturey, share awesome projects of other people and herbalists, talk about astrology because I'm sort of obsessed, maybe some political topics if it doesn't get too heated, and have this blog be fun and real and simple and effective, sort of like Doris. And now that I've laid out all my writing imperfections and aspirations, I feel more free to move on from here without some sort of facade.
So I'm piggy-backing on the 'Start.' title idea. And you know what? There may be a lot of things I end up copying from other people as I go along, and I'm gonna try and NOT feel bad about it. There's a lot of stigma around being a 'copy cat', beginning at the playground for most of us. For me personally, I probably wouldn't start anything if I was afraid because I wanted to do something that was inspired by another person's good idea.
